Major and Independent record labels for 'Rock' artists
Sony Music Entertainment

Major Record Label
RCA Records is an American record label owned by Sony Music, a subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America. It is one of Sony Music Entertainment's three flagship record labels, alongside Columbia Records and Epic Records. The label has released multiple genres of music, including pop, rock, hip hop, electronic, R&B, blues, jazz, and country.

Due to RCA being an independent record label but also a subsidiary of Sony, it does allow them to have the freedom they want but also the funds they need. As Sony is also such a big company they can provide a lot of information to RCA and lead them into the right direction too. Considering that they are a subsidiary company for Sony, they may not necessarily have the most amount of freedom than a solely independent record company like 'XL Recordings' would.
Independent Record Label

XL Recordings is a British independent record label founded in 1989 by Richard Russell, Tim Palmer and Nick Halkes. It now forms part of the Beggars Group.
As XL Recordings are an independent record label they are more inclined to care about the artists such as The Prodigy, more so than a major record company like Sony Music. Despite this, XL Recordings would have a lower amount of funding available than Sony Music and so may have to rely on other record labels or companies for recording studios, distribution, marketing etc. Therefore creating less profit overall for everyone involved in the process. Taking this into account, despite there being less profit available the artist and band do get a higher percentage of this than any artists signed by Sony Music would.
The prodigy and Radiohead are examples of XL Recordings signed artists.
